Matthew 2:1-6
That last verse – Bethlehem is “not least” among the governors, for out of it comes the governor. This governor is unlike the leaders brought together by Herod for he will “shepherd” the people of God. He will lead with his voice, with the power to correct, the concern of one intimately aware and concerned – fully involved in the life cycle of the sheep. He is more than just a mouth to speak law and covenant; he is, “with us, God.”=Εμμανουηλ
Interesting, in 2:3 Herod is troubled and the people with him. Why are the people troubled? Are they concerned that Rome will react badly? What have they more to lose? Do they fear Herod? Is his character so understood that the people know nothing good can come of this… Herod’s reaction proves their concern true. He will kill many for tis knowledge. But what joy and celebration to know that the savior is already born, living among you. They did not understand! Could not grasp what this might mean…
And the outsiders, μαγοι, come to worship – προσκυνησαι αυτω – him. What the “adults” ignore the “children” find amazing…
