WOTD, こんな

The word of the day is…

Japanese, konna, 1. a condensed adjective phrase signifying “this kind” or “such as this”. It is shortened from: これのような = このような = こんな.

With the words from the last couple days, you might be able to put together the sentence,

こんな 夢 を 見た。

“I saw this kind of dream.” Or, “This is the sort of dream I had.” That’d be the opening line of Natsume Sōseki’s “The First Night” (among others) in Ten Nights of Dreams, which is a quite interesting, if not slightly bizarre, story.
