Thanks, first, to Thomas Nelson for this review copy of This Is Your Brain On Joy. You can find review of individual sections of this book here, here, and here. This post will review the book as a whole.
This book aims to provide the general public, and specifically Christians, an introduction to recent advances in the study of the brain. This is intended to help the reader grow in compassion for those struggling under the weight of chemical and physical issues affecting the “proper” operation of the brain. It is also aimed to provide some initial direction for those who are themselves affected by ADD, ADHD, anger, depression, and fear and anxiety, to name a few of the addressed conditions.
The book is broken into multiple sections, each of which is very different in scope and function from the others. The first section introduces the author and the subject, and had the unfortunate side-effect of coming across as a sales pitch at times. The second section provides the most useful section, but needs introduction provided by Section 1. Section 2 is very readable, and packed with information that can be applied, considered and researched further. Section 3 is brief and provides a summary of the author’s intentions.
Overall, the book is a decent read. I would suggest it to those who struggle with depression and anxiety, or those interested in how our physical and emotional beings relate to spiritual reality. If nothing else, it will provide good food for thought. Balancing the richly textured information in Section 2 with the uncomfortable read in Section 1, I would give this book ★★★☆☆, and feel comfortable sharing this book with others.
